Our Mission
Americans do a lot of politics over beer. If you
- -Don’t know how to find out what’s going on in your city
- -Want to change something but don’t know where to start
- -Have no idea what groups and initiatives already exist
- -Feel like you’ve been screaming into the political void
Come learn with us, and find a way to take action on the causes you care about. If you’re looking for commiseration and community in Loveland, we can help you find your space.
Founded on the Junto tradition, we meet monthly to support each other in the face of increasing insecurity and tension. Part education, part activist network, part mutual aid—and all about community, Sugar Beets are passionate about understanding how our systems work and how we can protect our vulnerable neighbors from the worst systemic impacts.
With diverse educational, geographical, and working backgrounds, our shared expertise can help us turn this former sundown town into the kind of inclusive space we all hope to live in.
“Our goal should be interdependence: to be part of a community where rescue is viewed not as exceptional but as something that we owe each other.” ― Kelly Hayes, Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care
What to expect at a meeting
Every month, we gather around a big table to talk about what’s most on our minds. Each meeting starts with the chance to contribute something to our agenda, followed by:
- -A report from Sugar Beets who read the month’s selected text for tools
- -A skillshare or community Q&A with a wide range of local experts, like—
- -Our City Councilman and mayor pro tem
- -Education on mindful interaction with law enforcement
- -Emergency first aid skills
- -Leaders on local initiatives and community programs
- -How to successfully communicate with your representatives
- -Individual check-ins and accountability for chosen projects, like—
- -Developing an AI interface to summarize and tag City Council meeting minutes for reference and review
- -Hosting regular Write-Ins to maintain communications with our representatives
- -Hosting art days and protest sign making gatherings
- -Mutual aid initiatives and collaborations with other organizations
- -An update on community events and happenings
In between meetings, our lively Discord community maintains a calendar of events and local news updates. Keep an eye out for our bi-monthly newsletter, The Sugar Beet Society Papers, for a digest version of our shared knowledge.
Values Statement
Education is the key to change. Understanding how our systems work, how we can best communicate with each other, and what’s happening from day to day are all vital to effectively managing any kind of change.
It starts with ourselves. We can’t just expect our representatives to magically know what we’re thinking, or our neighbors to suddenly understand why their flag is problematic. Grounded in care and respect, we can individually affect our community wellbeing, and our privilege demands we do so.
Organization makes us stronger. With so many existing groups and initiatives, how do we know where to start? Well, we tell each other what we know and help each other find the right place to achieve our priorities.
Protect the vulnerable. As violence and dehumanizing rhetoric grows louder in American politics, it’s up to the rest of us to get loud about our at-risk neighbors and do what we can to keep them safe from hate.
Work small to effect big change. Something as little as ten words on a postcard can help sway a representative’s vote. Buying local helps to depower the billionaire oligarchs implementing the changes we don’t like to see. Checking on your friend might help them find the services they didn’t know about.
